How to Play Space Race

The Honorable Professor Stubble Presiding.

Professor Stubble, with lab coat, spectacles and an exceptionally long pointer

Class is in session, Space Racers!

Before we begin, a scientific observation: spores are much easier to study when they aren’t shooting at you. Keep your weed killer handy and pay attention to the doors. There may be a test. There will certainly be spores.

The object

Your assignment is to reach the red exit on each deck. Getting there may require keys, switches, a clever route or a strategically deployed bomb. Try to keep the Captain in one piece; replacement astronauts are expensive.

The keys

← →
Walk through the ship.
↑ ↓
Climb ladders. Up also activates a Trance Porter; Down crouches.
Space
Jump, or deflate your helium when you’re floating.
F or Ctrl
Fire weed killer. Watch your ammo!
Shift
Choose an inventory item.
Enter
Use the selected item.
P
Pause or resume.
R
Retry the deck. This costs an attempt.

A word from the Professor

  1. Open the game and choose a deck. Try an early numbered deck before the later inventory puzzles.
  2. Press Play. The game takes keyboard focus and starts the sound.
  3. If the keys stop responding, click the game picture. Switching tabs pauses the game; press Resume when you return.

Do try to stay alive

Running out of health—or falling into a lethal hazard—costs an attempt. Retry restores the deck and its starting score. Lose your last attempt and it’s game over.

A little help from your browser

Continue returns to your saved deck boundary with fresh attempts. It does not restore your exact position. Saves stay in this browser when storage is available.

Sound, music & small screens

The game has separate Sound and Music switches. Nothing plays on these information pages. You can read the guide on a phone, but the game currently needs a keyboard.
